With the missionary zeal, untiring efforts, noble sacrifices and undaunted initiative of the people of the locality in general, Kaliyaganj College was brought into existence as the temple of learning on the auspicious day of 20th August 1968 to cater to the long felt thirst for knowledge of young rural aspirants in conformity with the ever increasing craze for higher education in the post-Independence era. Affiliated to the University of Gour Banga (earlier North Bengal), this college is one of the largest degree colleges in the district of Uttar Dinajpur. The College has in its own possession 12.31 acres of land enriched with the potentiality for developing it into an ideal institution for higher studies.

Meanwhile, it has attained an imposingly pleasant growth, from a humble beginning, but as a matter of fact, even today, it has miles to go. And it is growing amazingly fast.
From the desk of the Head of the Institution
It is a great privilege to present my feelings about our institution to all of you.

College education and University education are considered as higher education. It is needless to say that higher education is going to assume a new dimension in the coming decades in our country specially in the context of Globalisation.

Our college was established in August, 1968 in this remote area like Kaliyaganj with six subjects in P.U. & B.A. (Pass/General) courses. Gradually our institution has unfolded its potentialities by introducing Honours Course in Commerce and in most of the Arts subjects. We have introduced Science in our college in the year 1990. We have started Honours course in Mathematics & Economics from 2004. Computer Science in Honours Course and Geography in General Course have been introduced from the session 2005-2006. Physics (Honours), Chemistry (Honours) and Sanskrit (Honours) courses have been started from the session 2009-2010. Education, Botany and Zoology in General Course will be introduced from this Session i.e. 2013-2014. At present we have 5200 students (approx) in our college. We have NSS unit and NCC unit through the activities of which we always try to develop civic rights, civic duties and proper social awareness among students.

Our College has been recognized as a “Study Centre” for Post Graduation Studies under ‘Directorate of Distance Education, Vidyasagar University’ in 2006-2007. At present we are offering M.A. course in five subjects (Bengali, English, History, Political Science, Sanskrit) and M.Com. Course in Commerce with Farm Management under this Directorate. We have started Vocational Courses in ‘Agriculture’ and ‘Home Science’ under West Bengal State Council of Vocational Education and Training from the session 2006-2007. We have been organising ‘Remedial Coaching Classes’ for SC/ST/Minority students and “Coaching Classes for Entry in Service’ for SC/ST/Minority students since 2007. Both these are UGC schemes.

To cope with the growing demand for quality education we have equipped our laboratories with standard instruments / materials. Our students are also enjoying a good library facility.
As per present UGC norms, all the Universities & Colleges have to go through assessment and accreditation by NAAC (National Assessment and Accreditation Council), Bangalore, an Autonomous Institution of the University Grant Commission. Our College has been accredited by NAAC at the ‘B’ Level. Re-accreditation is in process.
The high quality of education provided by our college has been widely acknowledged. We organize different seminars, lectures etc, on different current topics throughout the year. Many Graduates from this college are now well established in different fields.
We are committed to develop our academic standard and environment to such a level so as to this gateway of higher education may play a pivotal role in proper character building.
With the help of your hearty co-operation, I believe, we shall be able to scale properly the four pillars viz “Learning to do”, “Learning to know”, “Learning to be”, and “Learning to live together” as envisaged in the UNESCO education report.
